When should wisdom teeth be removed?

With wisdom teeth, various things are possible:

• There is enough room for them to erupt and work normally.
• There is insufficient room so they do not fully erupt. In this case, the surface is covered by the gum. An abscess forms into which food may pass. This becomes infected as the area cannot be cleaned properly.
• There is insufficient room and they do not erupt at all. In these cases, the wisdom teeth push against the next teeth along, which may cause caries or misaligned teeth.

In cases 2 and 3wisdom tooth removal is considered.

Once decided, we recommend a 3D Scan prior to removal. Additionally, using intravenous sedation, we can remove all 4 wisdom teeth in one operation, leading to much smoother post-operative care.
