Is it normal for the gums to bleed when I brush my teeth?

The gums bleed

It is not normal for the gums to bleed when brushing your teeth. Bleeding gums is, in fact, one of the symptoms of periodontal disease. If our hands bled each time we washed them, we would know something was wrong.

However, there are other warning signs for periodontal disease such as: discomfort when brushing, gums receding to expose previously cover roots, appearance of gaps between teeth, movement and displacement of teeth.

Bleeding gums is a clear sign that something is wrong. The bleed is typically caused by swelling arising from the accumulation of plaque between teeth and gums.

Patients often tell us that they stop brushing their teeth because the bleeding worries them. When this happens, brushing should, if possible, be even more thorough to try to remove any possible remains of accumulated plaque between gums and teeth.
